All purpose healing salve

When I immersed myself in this wonderful world of natural cosmetics and healthy lifestyle, what most fascinated me was the possibility to use different plants and herbs to cure so many different ailments. I discovered that nature is the largest pharmacy, and that for every malady, there is a herb that relieves or cures it.

homemade salve

This is a salve that can be used both as medicine or cosmetic, depending on the essential oil we choose. All salves are made of fats or oils that give them the texture, and a plant with medicinal properties. Depending on which plants and depending on which area of the body -always apply on the skin- we´ll get an effect, either calming, soothing, antiseptic, decongestant, expectorant, etc.

It is very simple to prepare, and unlike most salves you´ll find on the Internet, this recipe uses only coconut oil,  not Vaseline or  any other petroleum derivates, true to the philosophy of this blog.
Salve richness lies in the effectiveness of the essential oil we choose to treat a particular ailment or problem. Therefore I briefly list some of the essential oils and their most common uses:

  • tea tree essential oil: bactericidal, healing, anti-inflammatory, deodorant; ideal for treating acne problems, sunburn, athlete's foot, warts, herpes, skin irritations.
  • peppermint essential oil: antiseptic, astringent, healing, ideal for any alteration in the skin. Highly stimulating, it is recommended to clear the mind and relieve nerve problems (headaches, anxiety, stress, vertigo ...)
  • Lavender essential oil: analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory, regenerative, disinfectant; ideal for treating acne and any skin condition.
  • chamomile essential oil: bactericide, fungicide, analgesic and anti-inflammatory; ideal for any skin problem, highly soothing, and for any type of muscle pain.
  • Lemon essential oil: toning, antiseptic, astringent, antirheumatic and soothing; produces mental relaxation and improves concentration.
  • Eucalyptus essential oil: powerful antiseptic and decongestant; ideal for bites, herpes, burns; insect repellents, relieves muscle pain.
  • ylang ylang essential oil: antiseptic, antispasmodic, sedative of the nervous system, balancing; ideal for relaxing muscles, enhance creativity, joy, positivity.

These are not all but  the most common and accessible in the market essential oils. In a future post I will detail the best benefits and contraindications of each essential oil, and what is the most appropriate for each situation.

With any of these oils can we prepare our ointment.
If you want a relaxing effect, add to coconut oil a few drops of lavender or lemon or ylang ylang essential oil.
If we seek to relieve any muscle pain we can choose chamomile or eucalyptus essential oil, for example.
If we want to relieve headache and clear the mind, we can use peppermint or lavender, or ylang ylang essential oils.

This is my recipe and  you can adapt it to suit your needs:

Homemade salve:
3 tbsp virgin coconut oil
6 droplets of essential oil
optional 1 teaspoon beeswax

Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler, remove from heat, add the essential oil, remove and dispose in a  small container. Let settle some minutes.

As in Valencia is already getting quite hot, I was afraid coconut oil may lose consistency and I added 1 teaspoon of beeswax, but I honestly do not think it was necessary.

I used lavender essential oil, because I seek a relaxing and sedative effect to help sleep and  to sleep peacefully.

To do this, at night I apply a thin layer of salve on the temples, in the neck, wrists...
We´ll do the same for headache, apply on the temples, for muscle ache apply in the area of pain and inflammation, for bites or burns, we will apply on the affected area.

I can swear that the recipes I share are those that work on me and my "guinea pigs", and this salve worked perfect, but it is also true that as with any product, what goes well for a person may not have the same effect for another. It's a matter of trial and error, maybe an essential oil doesn´t produce the effect we seek, but certainly other oil does, you have to experience!
I hope you give it a go, it is really easy to make and it is also a nice gift for a special person !!

no Vaseline, no pretroleum derivates, just coconut oil and essential oil!
